Available First Aid Courses in Brisbane

Are you thinking of doing a First Aid Course for school, work or personal reasons? When my son had an unexpected asthma attack at his childcare centre in Zillmere, I realised if it happened at home I’d need to know what to do.

So, I did my research and found out there were tons of options for First Aid courses near me in Brisbane. If you’re looking at a First Aid course, the range of training on offer includes CPR (cardiovascular pulmonary resuscitation) only; First Aid plus CPR; and Child Care First Aid, which is required for teachers and child care workers.

Most courses can be delivered online, face-to-face or in a combination of online and face-to-face. And finally, prices and value for money can vary considerably, but most training providers offer sales or will price-match their competitors.

Now let’s take a closer look at options for First Aid courses for Brisbane locals, both face-to-face and virtual.

First, it’s a good idea to work out which course you’re interested in taking.

Are you a surf life saving volunteer who just wants a standalone CPR course … or a disability support worker needing First Aid for your accreditation?

Maybe you’re a mum or dad like me, considering Child Care First Aid, which covers emergencies for children and infants.

Whatever your needs, there’s plenty of training out there. For a handy video explaining some of the main training options, watch the following video:

Once you’ve established your preferred option, the next step is to identify the course type, length and budget that suits you. To give you a head start, we’ve explored a few of the main First Aid training options available near you in Brisbane.

Face-to-face courses run for 5-6 hours, but you are bound to get both your money, and your time’s worth during them, as they are delivered by trained professionals. Courses are run 7 days a week, 50 weeks a year.

The shortest course available is the combined online/face-to-face First Aid plus CPR course, which is 4 hours long (2 hours online learning plus 2 hours practical assessment).

Can I attend these courses at my own pace?

Provided you have a day free, you can certainly attend these at your own pace, because each course is a single 5-hour session. • HLTAID012 – Provide First Aid in an education and care setting (Child Care First Aid)

The First Aid course includes CPR techniques on adults and infants, as well as managing medical conditions like anaphylaxis, asthma and seizures; and medical emergencies like snake/spider bites, poisons and choking.

It also covers how to properly assess an emergency situation, first aid for bleeding, fractures and burns, and how to use an Automated External Defibrillator.

Child Care First Aid includes all features of the general First Aid course, along with compliance with first aid sections of the Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations (2011); and incident reporting in a child care setting.

CPR is $69 (discounted from $95) and Child Care First Aid at the time of writing is $149 (reduced from $250).

Summing Up

For me, even though I wasn’t planning on a profession in child care, I decided that with three children the Child Care First Aid course would best suit my needs. However, many people will only need a basic First Aid or CPR course. My advice is to shop around and choose whether face-to-face or online learning suits your lifestyle and goals.

A few more tips based on what I learned: make sure you have your Unique Student Identifier, or USI Number, on hand before you enrol in a course. All students who start nationally recognised training from 1 January 2018 need a USI, which is a reference number that you carry with you throughout your education. Your USI is free, secure to use and access. You can easily create your USI by going to the Australian Government site at https://www.usi.gov.au/about

And finally, all the providers whose websites I visited have strong COVID-19 precautions in place. These include appropriate hygiene and sanitisation measures; limited class sizes; and staff professional development.

Given that all providers offer online as well as in-person options, this means you can rest assured that if future restrictions come into place to limit face-to-face availability, you can always complete a course by Zoom or another online alternative.

So enjoy acquiring your First Aid qualification, and make sure to let us know if you have any questions!
