Let us take a look at these points in detail.

The size

Triangular bandages come in different sizes, so it would be wise to choose one that would fit comfortably.

If the bandage is too big it will be difficult to tie securely, and if it is small it will be uncomfortable and not effective.

Ease of use

Always make sure to look for a triangular bandage that is easy to use, it has to easily fold and tie.

It is recommended to practice folding and tying the bandage, because when there’s an emergency situation you will be able to do it correctly and quickly.

Purpose

An important point would be to think about the purpose of the bandage when choosing one.

If you are choosing a bandage for a broken arm, go for a bandage that’s long to tie around comfortably and strong enough to support the weight of the arm.

Sterility

The bandage will need to be free of any contaminants before using it, if not there is a chance of infection happening.

How to effectively use a triangular bandage sling

A triangular bandage sling is used to support an injured arm, wrist and forearm. It is a very helpful visual warning to others that someone is injured.

Here are the steps to effectively use a triangular bandage as an elevation sling:

  • The patient will need to hold the injured arm across the body with their fingers pointing to the shoulder tip.
  • Position the bandage with the base running down the center of the body and the pointed end on the injured side’s elbow
  • Gently lay the bandage over the supported arm and loop the top end around the front of the rock, allowing it to rest on the shoulder that’s not affected
  • Carefully wrap the lower part of the injured side and guide the loose end of the bandage from the elbow across the back, and onto the tip of the shoulder on the opposite side
  • Take the top end of the bandage and twist it around your fingers, avoiding any pressure on the injury.
  • The two ends will need to be tied together and positioned slightly above the collarbone
  • Smooth out the excess fabric from the elbow point and along the arm beneath the sling. Secure it in place.

Here are the steps to effectively use a triangular bandage as an arm or shoulder sling:

  • Gently slide the injured arm or shoulder under the bandage and bring the top end of the bandage around the back of the neck
  • Fold the bandage in half, creating a triangle with a long edge and two shorter edges
  • Place the middle of the long edge of the triangular bandage at the base of the injured arm of shoulder
  • The two shorter edges should be tied around the neck, positioned in a way that it is not uncomfortable
  • The long edge that is hanging should be wrapped around the wrist or hand of the injured arm
  • Tuck the end of the bandage under the elbow to secure it in place
  • Ensure the bandage is not wrapped too tight and restricting blood flow

However, if you are unsure of how to treat the injury with the triangular bandage or if it’s too severe, seek medical attention immediately.

How to apply a triangular sling to a fractured clavicle

When it comes to applying a triangular sling to a fractured clavicle, here are some steps that will help you:

  • To make a clove hitch using a bandage, take two large hoops of the bandage. Form the first loop by bringing one end of the bandage upwards and the other end downwards.
  • Ensure that both ends are caught between the loops as you fold the two loops towards the center.
  • Instruct the patient to place their injured arm across their body, with their fingers pointing towards the opposite shoulder tip. Gently slip the two loops over the hand and lower arm while ensuring that the ends of the bandage are hanging downwards.
  • Take the bandage ends up on either side of the limb and loop it around the patient's neck. Make sure that it is properly adjusted, so that a knot can be used to secure it just above one side of the collarbone, without causing any pressure on the neck.
  • The knot can be placed on either side of the neck, depending on the comfort levels of the patient.

Triangular slings are used as a form of support for a:

  • Joint
  • Bone
  • Limb

What is the most suitable angle of inclination for slings?

When wearing a sling, a suitable angle of inclination would depend on the specific application and the size of the bandage.

The angle of inclination should usually be around 60 degrees, allowing for proper support of the injured limb and avoiding any excessive pressure on the affected area.

But if the injured area is the neck or shoulder, the angle of inclination will have to be close to 45 degrees. Any degree more can restrict movement and cause discomfort.

Note that the correct application of the bandage sling is very crucial for effective support.

A triangular bandage is usually cut into a right-angled triangle, and is considered to be versatile compared to other bandages.

It has to be held against your body firmly, if not your recovering arm or shoulder will be strained and stressed - causing the healing process to be slower.

Professional medical advice and training on the correct application of bandage slings is recommended.
